At 600 meters above sea level, this grand cru vineyard It is not only the tallest in the town of Torroja del Priorat, but also the first (2003) in the Terroir Al Limit collection. It's the Matterhorn of winemaking, a challenge to be attempted simply because it's there: 80-year-old Carignan vines, steep black slate slopes, scorching Southwestern exposure.
It was also love at first view. Inspired by a cellar approach to the cool, mist-laden hills of Burgundy, this far-flung wine is hand-picked, native whole-cluster fermented, skin-kissed for two weeks, then aged for 16 months in 1,200-pound Stockinger fuder. l for 16 months.
Like the dusty, sun-kissed hills of Torroja where it grows, this wine has a hard, raw power. Opulent black fruit and rich smoky and spicy aromas swirl in the almost black depths of the glass. Despite the initial touch of strength, a serious and thoughtful character emerges with bright, taut acidity and incredible drive.
