Kasteel beers began to be created in 1989, when the demand and interest for abbey beers was increasing in Belgium. The first Kasteel beer, the donker, was the quadrupel-style dark ale.
In 1986, the Van Honsebrouck family bought Ingelmunster Castle, a castle from 1075 belonging to the Count of Flanders where the brewery organizes events, celebrations and tastings.
