Description
Obsidian was sacred to all the Mayans, an enigmatic stone forged by the fire of lightning sent by God. The Mayans, represented by an alligator, considered Obsidian as the last gift of the gods of Xibalbá, deities represented by a two-headed serpent. The Goddess Itzpapalotl was the incarnation of the Obsidian Mayans, known as the 'Obsidian Butterfly' , whose ornate wings were carved from this gemstone. She would rise from Xilbalba to accompany travelers and protect them under her magnificent wings.
