Description
It is the story of four generations who, with effort and a lifetime dedicated to the vineyard, have built one of the leading wineries on the Spanish wine scene. For more than a century, the winery has been making wines young people using traditional methods such as carbonic maceration, a process that was carried out in the Cueva de los Curas, which is the old cellar dug into the ground. Luis Cañas came onto the market in 1970 to market bottled wines, which had been sold in bulk until then, and in that same year the current winery was created. In 1989 Juan Luis Cañas, son of Luis Cañas, took over the management of the winery, which continued with the family tradition of making young wines but began to give importance to the production of aged wines. In 1994 a new and modern winery was inaugurated with the most advanced winemaking systems. The winery located in La Rioja Alavesa has vineyards surrounded by Sierra Cantabria, vineyards that are mostly advanced and old and planted on clayey-calcareous soils of low fertility on slopes and terraces. A total of 900 plots of approximately 400 hectares of own vineyards, with low production per vineyard. Viticulture is organic without the use of herbicides or any other aggressive practice. After the harvest, the grapes are transported to the winery using plastic boxes for old vineyards and trailers for young vineyards. The grapes go through a double selection table to choose only the berries in the best condition. The wines are aged in French and American oak barrels with an average age of three years.
