Description

The origin of the history of Courvoisier begins at the beginning of the 19th century with Emmanuel Courvoisier and his partner Louis Gallois opening a wine and spirits company in the Parisian district of Bercy.
In 1811 Napoleon visited his warehouses in Bercy and was hosted by Louis Gallois, the Director, and Emmanuel Courvoisier. Legend has it that Napoleon took several barrels of cognac with him to Saint Helena.

In 1843, Emmanuel's son Felix Courvoisier established the Courvoisier company in Jarnac in partnership with Jules Gallois. When Felix died in 1866, his nephews and associates - the Curlier brothers - took over the business. Courvoisier's reputation as the finest cognac in existence was reinforced by Napoleon III who granted Courvoisier the title of ' Official Purveyor to the Imperial Court' in 1869. This certificate is now on display at the Courvoisier  museum in Jarnac, along with other Napoleonic artifacts and memorandums.

In 1909, the English Simon family took over the Courvoisier business. and began to build the identity of the Courvoisier brand and developed its global reputation. They established the silhouette of Napoleon and introduced the Josephine bottle in 1950, currently these two symbols are recognized worldwide.
