The distillery was founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii in the Yamazaki Valley, taking advantage of its exceptional climate and water. In 1929, the first whiskey "Suntory Shirofuda (White Label)" was launched, which was initially unsuccessful.
However, in 1937, the company achieved commercial success with the introduction of "Kakubin" whiskey.
Later, in 1984, Yamazaki Single Malt was launched, which began to gain international recognition. In 2003, the Yamazaki 12 year old won a gold medal at the International Spirits Challenge, standing out globally.
Finally, in 2014, the Yamazaki Single Malt Sherry Cask 2013 was named the best whiskey in the world by Jim Murray's Whiskey Bible.
